PHOENIX (AP) - A federal judge in Phoenix has denied a motion for an injunction to stop construction on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
In her ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Diane Humetewa repeated her conclusion that freeway opponents aren’t likely to succeed in their ongoing legal battle against the project should they choose to continue their appeals.
The initial construction phase of the 22-mile-long freeway began last month with construction of the main part scheduled to begin early next year.
The new freeway will connect with Interstate 10 in southeast Phoenix at one end and in southwest Phoenix at the other, providing an alternative to I-10 through central Phoenix.
The completed project is expected to open by late 2019 and have three general-use lanes and one HOV lane in each direction.
