BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Charlie Baker is heading to New York to champion the case for charter schools.
The Republican will address the Manhattan Institute Tuesday morning to detail efforts in Massachusetts to expand access to what he called quality public education, including a ballot question that would allow for more public charter schools.
The Manhattan Institute describes itself as “a free-market think tank.”
Much of the $20.6 million raised by supporters of the question has come from New York, including from the New York-based Families for Excellent Schools and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Opponents have raised $12.5 million.
Baker has long extolled charters schools and backs Question 2, which would let Massachusetts add up to a dozen new or expanded charter schools each year outside of existing state caps.
