ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - The state Department of Health has introduced a new concept to describe pressing health issues facing Vermonters.

The St. Albans Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/2f5LvHw ) the concept, 3-4-50, was presented by Health Commissioner Harry Chen on Wednesday in St. Albans.

It stands for three behaviors - poor diet, lack of physical activity and tobacco use - that lead to four chronic diseases - heart disease and stroke, cancer, type two diabetes and lung disease - that result in more than 50 percent of deaths in Vermont.

The department says state residents are more likely to die from a largely preventable disease than an infectious one.

Chen says people can change these outcomes by changing their behavior. He says the department recommends taking small steps and talking to a health care provider.
