WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington’s Police Complaints Board has criticized the use of foul language and other conduct by Metropolitan Police Department officers.
The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/2gq3pFR ) reports that the board released a report on Monday that criticized the department and recommended ways to improve community relations.
The board reviewed 945 complaints from citizens from January 2012 to June 2016. It found that 190 of the complaints involved profanity, while 639 cases concerned the officers’ demeanor.
The board noted that officers are required to be courteous and orderly when dealing with the public. It suggested that the department should focus on improving communication skills and recognizing the “potentially grievous impacts” of improper language or conduct.
Interim police chief Peter Newsham says the department has acknowledged the recommendations, but says officers are professional and courteous.
