Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg reportedly will endorse Hillary Clinton for president when he addresses the Democratic National Convention this week in Philadelphia.

A spokesman for Mr. Bloomberg told The New York Times that the Clinton campaign solicited the tech billionaire’s endorsement by offering him a speaking slot at the convention.

Mr. Bloomberg mulled over the decision for several days and was pleased by the selection of Sen. Tim Kaine, a former Richmond mayor and Virginia governor who is a strong proponent of gun control, as Mrs. Clinton’s running mate.

“As the nation’s leading independent and a pragmatic business leader, Mike has supported candidates from both sides of the aisle,” said Mr. Wolfson, a senior adviser to Mr. Bloomberg. “This week in Philadelphia, he will make a strong case that the clear choice in this election is Hillary Clinton.”

Mr. Bloomberg had considered launching an independent White House bid this cycle, but feared his run might split the vote between Democrats and aid Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Mr. Bloomberg was elected mayor of New York City as a Republican, after having been a Democrat.

He has been sharply critical of Mr. Trump’s stance on immigration and suggestion to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country.
