Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Tuesday he hopes former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg runs for president.

“Well, he’s a friend of mine. I hope he jumps in,” Mr. Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “I love the competition. I would love to see Michael in the race, actually. I think he should do it.”

“He was a good mayor. He had a rough last four years, I will tell you that,” Mr. Trump said. “Really rough. I think he would have been much better if he didn’t take the third term.”

Mr. Bloomberg recently told the Financial Times he was “looking at all the options.”

“I find the level of discourse and discussion distressingly banal and an outrage and an insult to the voters,” Mr. Bloomberg said, adding the U.S. public deserved “a lot better.”

The New York Times also reported recently that Mr. Bloomberg has instructed advisers to draw up plans for a potential independent presidential run.

Since leaving office, the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent has devoted significant time and energy to promoting gun control and efforts to combat climate change.
