President Obama mourned the death of Prince Thursday, calling the recording artist “a creative icon.”
“Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent.”
The performer died at home Thursday at age 57. He had performed at the White House last June at a private party arranged by the Obamas for about 500 friends and celebrities, including Stevie Wonder and the Rev. Al Sharpton.
A longtime fan, Mr. Obama described Prince as “a virtuoso instrumentalist, a brilliant bandleader, and an electrifying performer.”
“As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all,” Mr. Obama said. “Funk. R&B. Rock and roll.
“’A strong spirit transcends rules,’ Prince once said — and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative,” the president said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his band, and all who loved him.”
