Paul Ryan: Reince Priebus received ‘extremely favorably’ by House GOP

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus got a favorable reception Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill, where Mr. Priebus walked House GOP members through some logistical information ahead of the party’s convention.

“Reince was received extremely favorably,” Mr. Ryan told reporters. “I am so pleased that such a meticulous attorney is the head of the RNC because he is making sure that the rules are the rules — that we follow the rules.”

“What Reince was doing was basically walking the members through how a convention is organized, what are the convention standing committees, how those committees are selected,” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said a few logistical questions about the convention came up at a recent telephone town hall.

“So these are the kinds of questions we are getting from our own constituents, and so what Reince wanted to do is simply walk members through the process as we’re going into it,” he said.

In his role as speaker, Mr. Ryan is chairing the GOP convention in July. Last week, he flatly ruled himself out as a potential nominee in the event of an open convention and said delegates should pass a rule saying the nominee has to be someone who ran for president.

But questions about the process behind an open convention continue to swirl, as it’s unclear whether any candidate will reach the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination before Cleveland.

GOP front-runner Donald Trump, who has criticized the RNC and labeled the delegate process “rigged” in the wake of recent losses in Colorado and Wyoming, appears to have the best shot at reaching the number before the convention.

Mr. Trump has amassed 744 delegates, compared to 559 for Mr. Cruz and 144 for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, according to the latest tally from The Associated Press. Mr. Trump also appears poised to pick up more delegates on Tuesday in New York, where he has been leading in the polls ahead of the April 19 GOP primary.
