Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Monday he’d love to have former President Bill Clinton, the spouse of Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, debate his wife, Jane.

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell brought up a Washington Post report suggesting that Mr. Clinton does not plan to do campaign activities for Mrs. Clinton in 2015 and asked Mr. Sanders if that would be a relief for him or whether he’d like to see the former president out there.

“No, I’d love him to be debating my wife, Jane,” replied Mr. Sanders, Mrs. Clinton’s only rival on the Democratic side at the moment. “She’s pretty smart.”

Mr. Sanders also reiterated his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a proposed trade deal between the United States and Pacific Rim countries that is pitting President Obama against some members of his own party.

“The TPP is, in my view, is a continuation of disastrous trade policies. Enough is enough — we need new approaches to trade which creates jobs in America and not in China,” he said.
