Former Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III says he’s planning to announce a 2016 presidential run in the first week of August, which would mark another addition to an already-crowded GOP field.
“I bring to the table experience that others don’t have,” Mr. Gilmore told the Richmond Times-Dispatch, which first reported the news.
He also said he doesn’t think any other Republican candidates have sufficiently addressed vital national security and economic concerns facing the country.
“I don’t think we’re addressing the threat to the country,” he told the paper.
Mr. Gilmore, who served as Virginia’s governor from 1998-2002, is also a former chairman of the Republican National Committee. He was a presidential candidate for a brief time in the 2008 cycle before dropping out. He later ran for U.S. Senate in 2008 and lost to Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner by more than 30 points.
