LOS ANGELES — “American Sniper” continued to stay in moviegoers’ sights.
The Navy SEAL marksman drama starring Bradley Cooper stayed in first place in its second weekend in wide release, earning $64.6 million. The total haul for “American Sniper,” which is up for six Academy Awards, stands at $200.4 million.
The thriller “The Boy Next Door,” starring Jennifer Lopez as a teacher who engages in a steamy affair with a young man, debuted in second place with $14.9 million.
The weekend’s other major new releases failed to crack the top 5.
The animated fantasy “Strange Magic” launched in seventh place with $5.5 million, while the Johnny Depp heist comedy “Mortdecai” flopped into ninth place with $4.2 million.
In addition to “American Sniper,” several films up for the best-picture trophy at next month’s Oscars continued to benefit from awards season recognition at the box office, including “The Imitation Game,” ’’Selma,” ’’Birdman” and “The Theory of Everything.”
