The deteriorating security situation in Yemen has prompted U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to warn: “Yemen is collapsing before our eyes. We can’t stand by and watch.”
Mr. Ban told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that members must “do everything possible to help Yemen step back from the brink and get the political process back on track,” Reuters reported.
Houthi rebels forced former President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to resign Jan. 22 when the presidential palace was taken over, and the parliament was disbanded soon afterward. Embassies for the United Kingdom and France also closed Wednesday due to the chaos.
On Wednesday, the U.S. said its special operations forces would continue to stay in the country despite the U.S. Embassy’s closure. Embassies for both the United Kingdom and France have also closed.
