Vice President Joseph R. Biden made a surprise visit to Washington on Saturday to meet with Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, spurring more rumors that Mr. Biden is close to announcing a presidential run.
Mr. Biden and Ms. Warren, who also faced early pressure from Democrats to run for the Oval Office, met in the vice president’s residence at the Naval Observatory, CNN reported.
Ms. Warren decided to sit out the 2016 race, to the disappointment of many on the left, but she has not formally endorsed a candidate.
Mr. Biden was meant to be spending the weekend at his home in Delaware, but sources told CNN he arrived in Washington shortly before lunchtime.
An aide to Mr. Biden confirmed the meeting, telling CNN: “The vice president traveled last minute to Washington, D.C., for a private meeting and will be returning to Delaware.”
Mr. Biden has been increasingly considering running for president and has told his associates he intends to make a decision in the next month. His candidacy could upend the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination, currently dominated by former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Many Democrats believe Mr. Biden to be a formidable alternative to Mrs. Clinton, whose favorability ratings have taken a downturn amid an ongoing scandal over her use of a private email server during her time at the State Department.
Multiple national polls show Mr. Biden would have significant support from Democratic voters if he decided to pursue the presidency.
He ran for president in 1988 and 2004, but dropped out both times early in the Democratic primary process.
