James Carville, the mastermind behind Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, downplayed the idea Wednesday that the email scandal involving former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will trip her up as she lays the groundwork for a 2016 presidential run.

The “Ragin’ Cajun,” said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show that he thinks that Mrs. Clinton’s use of email was “totally legal” and said that the Republican investigation into it is not going anywhere.

“At the end of the day, I predict this whole thing is going to amount to diddly-squat,” Mr. Carville said.

The Washington Times reported Tuesday that the Benghazi investigative committee on Tuesday formally called on Mrs. Clinton to give a transcribed interview to shed some light on how she picked and chose the emails that she handed over to the State Department and why she wiped her email server clean.

On Wednesday, Mr. Carville said the bigger challenge for Mrs. Clinton heading into the presidential race is to distance herself from President Obama.

“The question is that, ’You’re running for president, with eight years of a Democratic president. How are you going to be any different than this president, or are you going to be the same?’ ” Mr. Carville said. “That’s ultimately the question that comes down in people’s minds.”
