DETROIT (AP) — The federal government has announced a $12.2 million grant to help complete Detroit’s $140 million Woodward Avenue light rail line.
M-1 Rail construction workers were scheduled to start welding steel tracks Tuesday for use in the 3.3 mile project linking downtown Detroit to the city’s New Center area.
The Detroit News (https://bit.ly/1qBUodK ) reports that the U.S. Department of Transportation notified the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee that it was coming through with the money, which Detroit requested in April.
The streetcar project is scheduled for completion in late 2016. It will have 16 curbside and four median passenger stations. It is expected to spur economic and job growth along the Woodward Corridor.
The new grant is in addition to $25 million that the federal government committed earlier this year.
