The chief of staff to New York City’s first lady, Chirlane McCray, is dating and living with a convicted killer who was arrested just recently after nearly running over a police officer.

Rachel Noerdlinger, a top-tier city official who spends part of her work hours in meetings with members of the New York Police Department, lives with Hassaun McFarlan, 36, a convicted killer who refers to police as “pigs,” DNAinfo New York reported.

McFarlan’s been arrested numerous times, beginning at age 15, when he shot a fellow teen over an argument over a down jacket. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and stayed behind bars between 1993 and 2000, Newsmax reported. He’s also been arrested for drug trafficking and possession, and spent other periods of his life in prison.

In November 2013, McFarlan was charged with eluding a police officer, after he refused to stop at a traffic accident and caused both the tow-truck driver and police officer to jump to avoid being hit, Newsmax reported.

At one point, McFarlan also referred to police as “pigs,” the media outlet reported.

City Hall issued a statement about Ms. Noerdlinger’s involvement: “No one at City Hall condones criminal behavior or disparagement of the NYPD, including Rachel. Rachel is her own person. She is a strong, independent woman who possesses a core set of values and beliefs that align with this administration,” said Rebecca Katz, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio.
