President Obama said Friday he welcomed Scotland’s vote against independence from the United Kingdom.

Mr. Obama congratulated Scots “for their full and energetic exercise of democracy.”

“Through debate, discussion, and passionate yet peaceful deliberations, they reminded the world of Scotland’s enormous contributions to the U.K. and the world, and have spoken in favor of keeping Scotland within the United Kingdom,” Mr. Obama said.

In a huge turnout Thursday, Scottish voters rejected the referendum that would have given them an independent nation for the first time in 300 years.
