A Tennessee man has sparked some nationwide debate over a billboard advertisement he and his friends paid for that quotes a Bible passage that condemns homosexuality.

The billboard quotes from Leviticus 18: “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman. It is an abomination.”

Vietnam veteran Ronnie Monday of Portland said he’s just tired of seeing America stray from God, Raw Story reported.

“I just felt like something had to be done,” he told a local media station, WSMV. “I hate to see America turn their back on God.”

Mr. Monday said he reached his breaking point when President Obama threw in his weight behind same-sex marriage.

“[That was] the last straw,” he said, Raw Story reported. “I thought God needs his voice out.”

Not all see similarly.

Tennessee Equality Project Executive Director Chris Sanders said Mr. Monday might have a First Amendment right for the billboard ad — but that doesn’t mean it’s a message that needs to be shared.

“We hate to see anything in a community that encourages that kind of divisiveness, picking on people,” he said, Raw Story reported.
