St. Louis County police say they were responding to a report of gunshots, when a man with a rifle drove into a police vehicle and then tried to flee officers, opening fire at the same time.

Officers then shot and hit the man, whose name has not been released. But he was pronounced dead at the scene, The Associated Press reported.

No officers were injured during the incident, police spokesman Brian Schellman said, KSDK-TV reported.

The shooting took place in Jennings, located near Ferguson — the site of August’s police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, a black teen who was alleged to have just committed a store theft.

The community is still up in arms about that fatal shooting, demanding that the officer who pulled the trigger, Darren Wilson, be arrested. Mr. Wilson says he fired in self-defense, and the Department of Justice is investigating to see if race played a factor, given the police department’s predominantly white force.
