Thailand police say they’ve found the bodies of two British tourists, their heads beaten and bloody, on a beach in the southern island portion of the country.

Authorities say a 23-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, Norkfolk, was killed along with a 24-year-old man from Jersey, Channel Islands, The Associated Press reported. Their bodies were found Monday morning on a beach on the small, tourist island of Koh Tao.

Police also found a bloodied hoe nearby the bodies.

“The man was chopped in the back and on the side of his head while the woman was chopped in her face,” Col. Prachum Ruangthong said in the AP report. “It’s very gruesome.”

Police are still checking closed-circuit television cameras at nearby restaurants to help identify suspects. Meanwhile, outraged island residents have blocked piers to prevent the suspect from fleeing, AP reported.
