TAMPA, Fla. — Former President Bill Clinton returned to Florida and stumped for former Gov. Charlie Crist on Sunday, speaking about the middle class and the economy on the campaign trail in Tampa.

Clinton headlined a rally Sunday afternoon at Tampa’s Cyrus Greene Park where the two men appeared in ties before a crowd. Earlier in the day, Clinton campaigned with congressional candidate and fellow Democrat Gwen Graham. He also spoke at Florida A&M University.

“This is one of the greatest Americans in the history of our country,” Crist was quoted by the Tampa Bay Times as saying in introducing the former president to the crowd. “One of the greatest presidents ever, a guy who really understands what Americans and what people — what Floridians - care about.”

Clinton told those present that the future prosperity of the middle class was at stake in the Florida governor’s race pitting the Republican-turned-Democrat Crist against incumbent GOP Gov. Rick Scott.

“You have to decide wether you want to grow this economy from the middle class out — more jobs, higher wages …. or whether you want to go back to trickle-down economics,” Clinton said.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie spent Sunday barnstorming Florida with Scott in his bid for re-election, with stops in Plantation, Boca Raton and other cities. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will campaign with Scott in Sarasota Tuesday.
