Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council — a Christian-based organization that advocates for the traditional family structure — said the Supreme Court completely disregarded the will of the American people by refusing to hear any of the states’ gay marriage appeals.

In fact, the justices basically allowed the lower federal courts — the ones that had struck down voter-approved bans on same-sex unions — to do their “evil bidding,” he said during a “Fox News Sunday” appearance with Ted Olson, a former U.S. solicitor general who agreed with the Supreme Court’s move.

Most Americans oppose gay marriage and the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the appeals was tantamount to “robbing the people of their vote and their voice,” Mr. Perkins said, Politico reported.

But Mr. Olson argued otherwise.

“The justices saw an overwhelming trend in the same direction [toward gay marriage] and felt that the federal courts were handling the issue in a proper and appropriate way,” Mr. Olson said, Politico reported. “We have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights precisely because we want protection from majority rule.”
