Bono’s close call: U2 singer’s Learjet loses door during flight to Germany

U2’s Bono had a close call during a flight to Germany on Wednesday: A door on his Learjet 60 broke off in flight.

German officials with the country’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation confirmed the incident upon the plane’s safe landing.

“The Learjet lost a door where the luggage was put in,” Germout Freitag told ABC News. “There can be many reasons for this incident. Either something broke on the door, or the door wasn’t closed properly. Those are the usual problems that occur.”

Bono was flying from Dublin to Berlin to attend the the Bambi Awards at the time of the incident.

Aviation expert John Nance told ABC that although the sound of the door breaking off the plane was probably frightening, the loss of a luggage door would not normally put lives at risk.
