ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - Mourners plan to gather in suburban Chicago for the memorial service for an Illinois man who was killed with his son in Afghanistan last month.

A service for 56-year-old Gary Gabel of Palatine is planned Friday at the Orchard Evangelical Free Church in Arlington Heights. The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1j7wdLy ) a funeral for Gabel’s 31-year-old son will be scheduled later.

Gary and John Gabel were killed April 24 when an Afghan police security guard opened fire as they entered the grounds of a hospital in Kabul. Dr. Jerry Umanos, a pediatrician from Chicago, also was killed.

John Gabel’s wife, Theresa, was wounded.

A memorial fund has been set up at American Chartered Bank in Palatine for the benefit of Theresa Gabel and the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, Laila.
