CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities in Chicago are investigating the theft of 13 semi-automatic assault rifles from a freight train container at a rail yard on the city’s South Side.

Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent Thomas Ahern said Friday that the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport rifles were stolen sometime between Sunday morning and Tuesday morning. He says the thieves broke into a freight train car and then into the container with the weapons.

He says the weapons were being shipped to a licensed gun dealer in Minnesota. The train was coming through Chicago.

He says the ATF is working with the Chicago Police Department and Norfolk Southern Corp. on the investigation. He says no arrests have been made and no suspects identified.
