MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Hundreds of people turned out to get a glimpse inside the historic Tallcorn Towers in Marshalltown after an $11 million restoration.
People who gathered for an open house Tuesday were especially impressed with the remodeled ballroom. Others noted the plaster work, windows and chandeliers, according to the Marshalltown Times-Republican (https://bit.ly/1sl5EKa ).
“They did a terrific job,” Steve Sutherland of Marshalltown said as he walked through the ballroom.
St. Paul, Minnesota-based CommonBond bought the building in 2012 from B.O. Bryngelson of Marshalltown. As part of the renovation, the company converted 65 apartments into 42 one-bedroom and seven two-bedroom units.
The original Hotel Tallcorn opened in October 1928 as part of the Omaha-based Eppley Hotel Chain.
The project took advantage of state and federal historic preservation tax credits that required CommonBond to remodel the building in accordance with historic preservation guidelines.
Bryngelson was among those who toured the building he once owned.
“I like what they have done here,” he said.
Bryngelson said he appreciated CommonBond’s creation of retail space along the side of the building that fronts Main Street.
“They (CommonBond) will bring it back just like it used to be,” he said. “It is a very nice enhancement.”
Michelle Drummer, of Marshalltown, a sales associate with CBRE Hubbell Commercial, said she’s been receiving more inquiries about the retail space.
“The interest picked up significantly when the windows were installed and the room finished,” she said.
