MIAMI (AP) - Soccer star David Beckham is in Miami to meet with county commissioners and win their support for a downtown Major League Soccer stadium.
Beckham met with Miami-Dade commissioners Wednesday morning. He discussed the proposed Port of Miami site and the mayor’s suggested alternative.
Beckham and his team have encountered resistance from Royal Caribbean Cruises and other business and community leaders who say a stadium at the port would hurt cargo and cruise operations. Mayor Carlos Gimenez sent Beckham’s consultant a letter Monday suggesting they consider an alternative site near the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Beckham called the mayor’s suggestion “very exciting.” He said he would not call it his preferred site, but that it was “a very good option.” He added that he wants the stadium to be positive for the city.
