KOLKATA, India (AP) - Atletico Madrid has agreed to call the team it co-owns in the new Indian Super League, Atletico Kolkata.
Miguel Angel Gil Marin, the chief executive of the Spanish league leader, called the association with the Super League on Wednesday “a great idea to expand our brand and reach a new market.”
Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and a group of industrialists also have a stake in the team.
Retired cricket great Sachin Tendulkar co-owns the southern city franchise of Kochi, and Indian actors have stakes in other teams.
Aging star players such as Thierry Henry, Hernan Crespo and Fredrik Ljungberg are likely to compete in the inaugural edition of the eight-team tournament from September to November.
