PEMBROKE, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen a 132-acre site in Genesee County for a long-awaited western New York veterans’ cemetery.
Sen. Charles Schumer said Thursday the cemetery will be in the town of Pembroke, just north of exit 48A off the New York State Thruway.
Lawmakers and veterans have been lobbying for years for a cemetery in western New York to save military families a long drive to visit loved ones. Currently, the nearest cemetery to Buffalo is in Bath, 100 miles away.
The new site will be 30 miles from Buffalo and 48 miles from Rochester.
