TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - University of South Florida police say they have arrested a Tampa woman who was scamming students with stolen or fraudulent checks.

Lt. Chris Daniel says a USF police officer took Guecoba Latrice Dow into custody during a traffic stop Thursday on an outstanding arrest warrant. Police then learned that Dow’s passenger was a USF student who had just completed a transaction at Dow’s request at an ATM machine.

Daniel says that transaction fit a pattern of complaints about two suspects asking to use students’ ATM cards to deposit checks. Daniel says the suspects would deposit the checks into the students’ accounts and fraudulently withdraw funds.

Dow was held Saturday at the Hillsborough County jail on $30,500 bond on multiple theft and fraud charges. No attorney was listed.
