MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is increasing walleye bag limits on nearly 450 lakes in time for the holiday weekend in response to lower than average tribal harvests this spring.

The DNR reports Thursday that the six bands of Chippewa harvested about 27,400 walleye and 201 musky as of mid-May. The average harvests by the tribe are higher by about 2,500 walleye and about 100 musky.

Fisheries management chief Steve Hewett says the late spring thaw led to lower tribal harvests.

The department is increasing limits to five fish per day on more than half of the 447 lakes. A third of the lakes will have a three-bag limit. The DNR is also promoting its mobile app that includes regulations and other information.
