STORRS, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut says junior guard Brianna Banks has told the school she intends to transfer somewhere closer to her Georgia home.

Coach Geno Auriemma said Tuesday that Banks “showed great heart” both on the court and rehabbing from a knee injury that cut short her sophomore season. He wished her “nothing but the best.”

Banks, from Newnan, Georgia, played in 90 games during three years at Connecticut, averaging 4.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game. She had averaged 7.3 points and shot 34.6 percent from three-point range before her February 2013 knee injury. She was able to play in only 21 games in the 2012-2013 season. In this year’s national championship season she averaged 3.5 points in 37 games.

Banks said she will miss UConn “dearly” but “I need a fresh start.”
