PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Environmentalists will rally at the Deering Oaks Park bandshell in Portland to oppose the Keystone XL oil pipeline and the shipping of tar sands oil through Maine.

The event is part of the nationwide “Day of Action Against Dirty Fuels” and is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. The rally is co-sponsored by a host of Maine environmental groups and will include speakers such as Portland Mayor Michael Brennan and Phil Coupe of Revision Energy.

Environmental groups including the Sierra Club oppose the shipping of tar sands oil through Maine on the grounds that it would hurt the environment, wildlife, and drinking water. The Keystone XL pipeline would extend an oil pipeline system in Canada and the U.S. The federal government announced last month that the project is under indefinite review.
