Defense cuts could cost Fort Bragg transports

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The Air Force is considering retiring its aging fleet of C-130H transport planes.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (https://bit.ly/NvWZFC ) that could cost Fort Bragg its only unit capable of hauling paratroopers long distances.

The Air Force released budget documents Tuesday indicating it wants to retire the transport planes.

Twelve of the transport planes constitute the entire 440th Airlift Wing inventory.

Officials estimate the unit provides 23 percent of paratrooper airlifts at Fort Bragg, working with the 82nd Airborne Division and other units.

Officials with the 82nd Airborne have not commented on the possible effects of losing the planes.
