PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. (AP) - California regulators have arrested more than 120 people in a statewide crackdown on unlicensed contractors.
City News Service says the arrests - announced Friday - were made this week in a sting operation by the Contractors State License Board.
Fraud investigators posed as homeowners and sought bids on improvements.
The board says 115 of those arrested could face misdemeanor charges of contracting without a license. The crime can carry a six-month jail sentence and a $5,000 fine.
Others are suspected of charging too much for a down payment on work or failing to provide workers’ compensation insurance.
Rick Lopes of the license board says consumers should be careful when hiring contractors and always make sure they have a license.
