PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is proposing city and state laws that would prevent convicted murderers and others serving life prison sentences from getting municipal or state pensions.
Taveras’ main target of the legislation is former Providence police officer Nicholas Gianquitti, who is serving life in prison for fatally shooting Cranston Fire Department Lt. James Pagano in 2008. Gianquitti is getting an annual $50,000 accidental-disability pension from the city that was granted in 1992 after he injured a knee while on duty.
Taveras says Gianquitti doesn’t deserve the pension and anyone convicted of killing others shouldn’t be paid with the public’s money.
A bill on Taveras’ proposal has been introduced in the state Senate and the City Council is expected to review a proposed ordinance next week.
