CARSON, Calif. (AP) - L.A. Galaxy defender James Riley will be out for at least six months after having surgery on his left knee.

The Galaxy made the announcement Thursday.

Riley’s lateral meniscus was injured in the 32nd minute of the Galaxy’s game at Real Salt Lake last Saturday.

The Galaxy are the sixth team in 10 MLS seasons for Riley, who signed with the club last month after a preseason trial.

The Wake Forest product has scored just two goals in his decade in MLS, but Riley provided defensive depth for the Galaxy behind A.J. De La Garza and Todd Dunivant, who had a hamstring injury during the preseason.

The Galaxy (0-1-1) are off this week before facing Chivas USA on April 6.
