TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor will remain the city’s top cop for at least one year after her retirement in May.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced Tuesday that reduced crime in the city was a major factor in his decision to retain Castor.

Castor, who has a mandatory retirement date approaching May 6, is in the city’s deferred retirement option plan, which allows her to continue working while drawing her pension.

The program is limited to five years or 30 years of service, whichever comes first, and Castor had 30 years with the department as of February.

Castor’s current salary is $156,062. She was instrumental in security planning when the city hosted the 2012 Republican National Convention.
