EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies in Lane County have declared an impasse in talks with the county on a new labor contract.
The Register-Guard newspaper (https://is.gd/a64YpQ ) reports the sides are primarily wrangling over wages.
The deputies are part of a strike-prohibited union, so the matter is now likely to be resolved in binding arbitration.
The Lane County Peace Officers’ Association represents 235 employees.
The contract dispute comes less than a year after Lane County voters approved a five-year property tax levy to cover the staffing costs of maintaining at least 255 beds at the county jail.
Before it passed, the county was letting up to 100 inmates a week be released early.
