DETROIT (AP) - Nearly 20 Detroit firefighters won’t be racing to battle burning houses after the city learned their driver’s licenses are invalid.

An audit of driving records for all 850 fire employees found that 19 were working with expired or revoked licenses.

The city said Friday that most allowed their licenses to expire or failed to pay fees and fines. They won’t be allowed to work without licenses.

Fire Commissioner Jonathan Jackson says the department expects employees to follow the law and city policies.

At least 13 firefighters are expected to have their licenses renewed in short order. Those unable to get a valid license in the next 30 days could be disciplined.
