PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Problems have been found with ballots mailed to labor union members voting on a proposed settlement of a court fight over Rhode Island’s landmark 2011 pension overhaul, including one ballot that was mailed to a Pawtucket teacher who died five years ago.
The Providence Journal also reports (https://bit.ly/1gCdxlP ) that at least 19 teachers in Warwick haven’t received ballots.
More than 24,000 ballots were mailed last week in the first round of voting on the pension settlement.
Retired state workers went to court to challenge the pension overhaul, but they reached an agreement with state officials to ease some of the changes. Retirees and state lawmakers must approve the deal.
One ballot was mailed to Pawtucket to the late kindergarten teacher Eleanor “Lolly” Cute. Union officials have apologized to her family.
