More than half of Americans think that employer-based health plans should not be exempt from providing coverage for contraceptives as the U.S. Supreme Court is set to weigh the constitutionality of that portion of President Obama’s health care law.
Religious organizations are already exempt from the requirement that their health care plans cover birth control, and 41 percent of Americans say other employers who object to birth control and other contraceptives on legal grounds should be exempt as well, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Fifty-three percent say such plans should not be exempt from covering prescription birth control.
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments next week from two for-profit companies, who say the rule forces them to choose between their religion and proving health coverage to their employees.
The poll of 1,000 adults taken March 5-9 has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
