FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit school district and its teachers union have agreed to scrap a contract clause that gives employment preference to people “of the non-Christian faith.”
Ferndale Public Schools spokeswoman Shelley Rose says the 2,190-student district didn’t realize the clause was in the lengthy document until the Mackinac Center contacted it Monday.
Rose says the language apparently made it into an earlier contract in the 1970s for reasons she can’t explain. Rose says the district and the Ferndale Education Association will stricken the un-enforced clause from their contract that was ratified March 5.
State Rep. Tim Kelly has asked the state Board of Education to investigate. The Saginaw Township Republican says he’s glad the language is being purged but says it’s disturbing it was put there in the first place.
