DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (AP) - State Sen. Kirk Dillard says even though he lost the GOP nomination for Illinois governor, he “came real close” to winning.

Dillard congratulated businessman Bruce Rauner (ROW’-nur) during his Tuesday night concession speech. Dillard also offered the Illinois Republican Party advice during his speech too. He said the GOP in the state should “follow our broad-based coalition.” Dillard had support from some of the state’s largest public-employee unions and others statewide.

Dillard said his campaign was looking to “bring an end to one city and one party control of Illinois.” Dillard told his supporters he would see them “in a different capacity down the road.”

Rauner takes on Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn in the November general election.
