COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - The Coventry firefighters’ union is trying to stop the planned closure and liquidation of the Central Coventry Fire District with an appeal to the Rhode Island Supreme Court.

The district has been in bankruptcy receivership since October 2012. A Superior Court judge last month ordered the liquidation and closure of the fire district by May 16.

Union President David Gorman says the union is appealing the liquidation ruling to the state Supreme Court because there is no plan in place to provide fire protection and emergency services to the community now served by the fire district. He also says liquidation isn’t needed because the district has plenty of money - about $2 million.

Gorman says no one is willing to negotiate with the union to keep the fire district open.
