PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - With spring days away, Petersburg is preparing to continue its crackdown on unkempt lawns.

An ordinance adopted in 2011 prohibits grass more than a foot tall. Property owners have 48 hours to comply after the city tags their property. If the city cuts overgrown grass or weeds, it will place a lien on the property to recover its cost.

The Progress-Index (https://bit.ly/1iSAh8O ) reports that the city issued more than 650 citations in 2013. City crews mowed 150 properties and private contractors hired by the city mowed 520 properties.

The city has hired a contractor to do all the work this year.

City manager William E. Johnson III says a clean city helps promote economic development and tourism.
