MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Increasing Vermont’s minimum wage will be the topic of a public hearing at the Vermont Statehouse this week.
The House Committee on General, Housing, and Military Affairs has scheduled the hearing for Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the House of Representatives.
Various proposals have been floated for raising the wage. Gov. Peter Shumlin is backing a plan to raise it from its current $8.73 to $10.10 per hour in steps between now and 2017. Some House members are pushing for an increase to $12.50 or more.
House Speaker Shap Smith says he wants to make sure that any increases in the wage don’t cause low-income working Vermonters to lose benefits like food stamps and housing subsidies.
