ERIE, Pa. (AP) - GE Transportation says it’s recalling about 70 people back to work at the company’s century-old transportation plant in northwestern Pennsylvania.
The company announced plans a year ago to eliminate 950 union jobs along with 100 salaried positions at the Lawrence Park Township plant.
Scott Duke, president of Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, said 77 union workers who lost their jobs last year are back at work or will be soon.
He said stronger-than-expected orders prompted the recall, and the company says it will build 507 locomotives this year.
GE Transportation, however, is downplaying the significance of the moving, saying it is adjusting staffing levels to customer needs but that shouldn’t have a significant effect on overall employment levels at the plant this year.
