A gun-control group funded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to start vetting congressional candidates ahead of the 2014 midterm elections, as it looks to ramp up pressure on lawmakers to pass more restrictive gun laws.
The Washington Post reported that Mr. Bloomberg’s group, called Everytown for Gun Safety, will start on Monday asking those running in federal races to respond to a 10-part questionnaire that probes them for their stances on, among other things, background checks for gun purchasers, limiting magazine capacity and passing laws restricting gun trafficking.
Mr. Bloomberg will spend upwards of $50 million on building a grassroots movement dedicated to pushing Congress to embrace tougher gun laws, The Post said.
The effort is meant to serve as a counterweight to the National Rifle Association and other gun rights groups.
