Police officials in Memphis, Tennessee, said 308 police officers have called in sick in recent days, an apparent protest against the city’s mulled reforms to their health care policies.
Memphis Police Directory Toney Armstrong said the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department has been called to assist with law enforcement within city limits, The Associated Press reported.
The protest comes as the City Council prepares to vote on measures that affect the subsidies city workers get for health care. The funds will instead go toward bailing out the city’s pensions, AP said.
Mayor AC Wharton said the city didn’t have a choice — state law requires that localities fully fund their pension plans within five years.
